Our Story

Founded in March 2002, the Good Neighbor Ensemble emerged from the dedicated volunteers of the Good Neighbor Ministry. Initially comprised of middle-school-aged children, the ensemble was formed under the guidance of music director Jina Choi to perform classical and religious music for lonely nursing home residents. Since its first concert at Woodcrest Health Care Center, the ensemble has expanded its reach, performing monthly at over twenty nursing homes across Bergen and Passaic counties. The ensemble also shares its music with local churches and organizations, including the Riverside Church in New York and various United Methodist Churches in New Jersey. Additionally, the ensemble participates in annual charity events, raising funds for causes such as starving children in North Korea and orphans in Haiti. Led by Conductor Dongmin Kim, the ensemble now boasts over 40 talented musicians who rehearse weekly and perform regularly to spread joy and comfort through their music.

Impact

Good Neighbor Ministry enriches the lives of elderly residents and patients in nursing homes, senior centers, and hospitals through engaging musical programs. Since its inception in June 1999, the ministry has grown from 4 volunteers to over 200, including 23 pianists and 21 sing-along leaders. Weekly programs are hosted at the Bergen Regional Medical Center and 43 different senior nursing care facilities throughout New Jersey, fostering connection and joy among participants.
