Our Story
The seed for Giwayen Mata was planted in 1991 when Ramatu Afegbua Mahmud Sabbatt organized sistahs for jam sessions in Atlanta's city parks. This initiative was rooted in the principles of Kuumba and Kujichagulia, which emphasize creativity and self-determination. In 1993, Giwayen Mata was officially formed, responding to a call from Amirah Wazir for the Celebration ’93 event, a fundraising fashion show and Mother’s Day celebration. Under the artistic direction of Tambra Omiyale Harris, Giwayen Mata continues to produce performance works and classes that celebrate the African Diaspora and the hidden treasures of Black womanhood.
