Our Story
Established in 1972, the Givens Foundation for African American Literature began with a mission to support African American students through scholarships. In 1985, the Foundation shifted its focus to literature, partnering with the University of Minnesota to acquire a significant collection of African American literary works. Today, it stands as Minnesota's sole organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating black literature and writers.
