Empowering Voices Through Journalism
In 2014, Vanessa Martinez discovered the vibrant spirit of students at Karuna Girls School (KGS) in Nepal. Their eagerness to learn sparked an idea: to create a program that would harness the potential of talented girls through journalism. With the support of dedicated educators and volunteers, the Girl Reports program was born in 2015, bringing together a group of 13 extraordinary girls.
Initially, the program faced challenges, including early marriage, poverty, and societal constraints that hindered girls' education. Despite these barriers, the program thrived, teaching participants essential journalism principles, computer skills, and leadership abilities. The girls engaged in community walks, learning to view their surroundings through a reporter's lens, fostering inquiry and discussion about their rights and responsibilities.
By the end of its first year, Girl Reports had made significant strides. A field trip to Kathmandu allowed participants to present their work to professionals, enhancing their public speaking skills and confidence. This exposure not only inspired the girls but also connected them with successful women in journalism, providing invaluable mentorship.
Since then, the program has expanded, training numerous girls in journalism and leading to the publication of a community news magazine. The curriculum has evolved to better serve participants, focusing on sustainable operations and formal evaluations to ensure continuous improvement.
