Empowering Education for All

Gastonia Freedom School began as a dream nurtured by Cassandra Byrd, an early childhood educator and community organizer, alongside her daughter, Crystal Byrd Farmer. Their journey into education was inspired by Crystal's experience homeschooling her autistic child, Courtney, who introduced them to the transformative power of self-directed learning. Witnessing the joy of discovery at ALC Mosaic in Charlotte, NC, they recognized the urgent need for an alternative educational model in Gaston County, particularly for minority students and those with special needs.

A Mission to Transform Lives

Gastonia Freedom School is dedicated to providing innovative educational opportunities for the most vulnerable children in the community. By embracing self-directed learning, GFS fosters an environment where children are respected and supported, allowing them to thrive outside the rigid structures of traditional schooling. This approach not only combats the stigma often faced by students but also rekindles the joy of exploration and discovery.
