Our Story
Gardening Volunteers of South Texas (GVST) began in 2002 as a passionate group of gardeners from the Bexar County Master Gardener program. With the encouragement of esteemed garden mentors, GVST was formed to focus on water conservation and best gardening practices in the South Texas region. The founding members, including notable figures from Texas A&M’s research team, aimed to create a community dedicated to sustainable gardening.
Over the years, GVST has expanded its reach, welcoming members from various gardening organizations such as the San Antonio Garden Club and the Native Plant Society. The organization has been instrumental in numerous civic gardening projects, including the Watersaver demonstration garden at the San Antonio Botanical Garden and xeriscape gardens at local educational centers.
