Transforming Urban Spaces into Garden Classrooms

In 2005, a coalition of educators, neighbors, and community organizations came together to transform a large expanse of blacktop at 24th Street Elementary into a vibrant 1.5-acre garden classroom. This initiative, driven by the need to address poverty, food access, and academic performance, led to the establishment of the Garden School Foundation. Today, the foundation serves ten Title I elementary schools in Los Angeles, focusing on garden-based education and community health.

Making a Lasting Impact

Garden School Foundation provides essential garden-based education to over 3,200 students annually, distributing more than 87,000 pounds of fresh produce. The programs aim to bridge the educational achievement gap, reduce health disparities, and combat food insecurity through hands-on learning.
