Our Story
The Garden Club of Mount Desert was founded in the summer of 1923, inspired by the renowned landscape architect Beatrix Farrand. Initially organized as a small group, the club became a member of the Garden Club of America in 1926. Early activities included vibrant flower shows and community projects, such as establishing a garden bookshelf in the local public library. During the Great Depression, members created vegetable plots to support unemployed residents. The club's Open Garden Day, which began in the 1930s, allowed residents to explore the beauty of members' gardens. After World War II, revenues from this event were redirected to civic projects and conservation efforts. Today, with over 70 members, the club continues to support horticultural and conservation organizations through its engaging events.
