Our Story
Founded in March 1916 by a passionate group of twelve women, the Garden Club of Lexington has been a cornerstone of community beautification and environmental stewardship in Lexington, Kentucky. The club's first major project involved planting trees along Richmond Road, transforming it into a stately boulevard that welcomes visitors to the city. In 1924, the club joined the prestigious Garden Club of America, broadening its impact and outreach.
In 1950, the Garden Club was invited to create a garden at the historic estate of Henry Clay, known as Ashland. With the help of renowned designer Henry F. Kenney, the club developed a stunning twenty-acre landscape, including a unique peony garden. Every Wednesday from late March through October, dedicated members work tirelessly to maintain these gardens, which have been recognized with an Historical Preservation Award for their exceptional stewardship.
To support the ongoing maintenance of the Ashland Garden, the club published two successful cookbooks: Bluegrass Winners and Entertaining With Bluegrass Winners. These cookbooks celebrate Kentucky's culinary heritage and have sold over 100,000 copies combined, ensuring the gardens remain a vibrant part of the community.
