Our Story

Founded in 2006 by Prof. Dixon Chibanda in Zimbabwe, Friendship Bench began with a simple yet powerful idea: to provide accessible mental health care through community engagement. Starting with a single bench in a township, trained grandmothers offered talk therapy to those in need. This innovative approach has since expanded, training thousands of community health workers and replicating its model in multiple countries, including the USA.

Impact

Friendship Bench has successfully trained over 3,000 community health workers and served 624,000 clients, achieving a remarkable 78% reduction in depression and suicide ideation. Participants have experienced a 60% improvement in their quality of life, showcasing the effectiveness of community-based mental health interventions.
