Our Story

Friends of Tryon Creek is a community-supported nonprofit founded in 1970 by dedicated park neighbors with a mission to preserve Tryon Canyon. In partnership with Oregon State Parks, the organization aims to inspire every community to cultivate their relationship with nature in the cherished urban forest of Tryon Creek State Natural Area. With over 50 years of experience, Friends of Tryon Creek has embraced a new mission and strategic plan to create inclusive programming and pathways for all communities, particularly those historically marginalized. Recognizing the ongoing legacy of colonialism, the organization is committed to prioritizing BIPOC leadership and decolonizing traditional nonprofit and environmental education models.

Impact

In 2023, Friends of Tryon Creek welcomed 24,922 visitors to the Nature Center and organized over 320 volunteers who contributed more than 5,400 hours to park events and stewardship. The organization directly reached 5,130 youth, adults, and families through various programs and events, fostering a deeper connection to nature.
