In the heart of North Plains, Oregon, a rural community of just 1,800 residents, the Friends of the North Plains Public Library emerged from a shared vision to establish a public library. In 2000, a dedicated group of citizens recognized the need for access to books and resources, leading to the formation of this nonprofit organization. Their efforts transformed a small janitor’s closet at the Jessie Mays Community Center into a thriving library, which officially opened its doors in February 2003 with a modest collection of 1,762 items.

Since its inception, the Friends of the North Plains Public Library has made a significant impact, providing access to educational materials for over 2,570 individuals in its first year alone. The library has continued to grow, thanks to the unwavering support of the community and dedicated volunteers.
