Born from the dedication of two Alexandria women, Ellen Pickering and Barbara Lynch, the Mount Vernon Trail has transformed into a vital recreational and transportation route since its inception in 1972. With the support of countless volunteers and the National Park Service, the trail has expanded significantly, showcasing the power of community involvement.

Our Impact

The Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail collaborates with the National Park Service to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for millions of users each year. Over 5,000 volunteers have contributed more than 12,000 hours to enhance the trail, ensuring it remains a cherished community asset.
