Our Story
In the aftermath of a devastating forest fire in 1959, injured animals found refuge at what is now the Big Bear Alpine Zoo. Over the years, this facility has evolved from a makeshift zoo into a vital sanctuary for wildlife. The theft of three bald eagles in 1988 sparked the formation of the Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, dedicated to enhancing security and supporting the zoo's mission. Through fundraising and community engagement, this organization has played a crucial role in improving the zoo's facilities and educational outreach.
