Our Story

Founded in 1986 by poet and activist Lewis MacAdams, Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) is a grassroots organization dedicated to revitalizing the Los Angeles River. With a focus on environmental justice and community engagement, FoLAR works tirelessly to protect and restore the river's natural and historic heritage.

Our Impact

FoLAR has organized the Great Los Angeles River Clean-Up, the largest urban river cleanup in the U.S., mobilizing thousands of volunteers to remove tons of trash. The organization advocates for policies that enhance river restoration and community access, significantly contributing to the ecological health of the river and its surrounding neighborhoods.
