Founded in 1999 by Father Peter Banks, Friends of St. Lawrence-Watts Youth Center aims to empower children and families in Watts through educational and advocacy programs. The Literacy Center, established in 2001, focuses on building strong reading foundations for children's success. Under the leadership of Linda Northrup since 2003, the organization has expanded its community role, addressing the evolving needs of residents.
Friends of St. Lawrence-Watts Youth Center has significantly improved reading scores for children below grade level through its Literacy Center, which pairs them with local teen tutors. Annually, the organization serves approximately 850 individuals, providing scholarships, ESL classes, and legal advocacy to enhance educational opportunities and community support.
