Rowing at Simsbury began in 1971 when enthusiasts purchased a used eight and hung it from slings near the Chart House. As the sport evolved from a hobby to a competitive varsity program, the Friends of Simsbury Crew was incorporated in 1977 to provide essential emotional and financial support to the rowers. The Paine boathouse, built through the dedication of Simsbury parents, stands as a testament to this commitment.
The Simsbury High School crew has a remarkable history, winning numerous state, New England, and National championships. Notably, Simsbury has sent boats to England to compete in the prestigious Royal Henley Regatta, showcasing the talent and dedication of its young athletes.
The Friends of Simsbury Crew plays a crucial role in supporting the rowing program financially, covering equipment costs and boathouse maintenance that are not fully funded by the Board of Education. Without this vital support, the rowing program would struggle to continue.
