About Friends of Litter4Tokens

Founded in November 2015 by Clare Swithenbank-Bowman, the Litter4Tokens initiative began at the Ithemba Labasha Community Centre in Shakashead, South Africa. This innovative campaign aims to empower the South African population while simultaneously cleaning the environment. By creating a circular economy, Litter4Tokens encourages community members to collect litter in exchange for tokens that can be redeemed for essential goods, thus fostering pride and respect for their surroundings.

Impact on Communities

The Litter4Tokens campaign operates in various regions, including KwaDukuza, Etekweni, Hillcrest, Port Elizabeth, East London, Richards Bay Mpumalanga, and Estcourt. By incentivizing litter collection, the initiative not only cleans up local environments but also provides a vital source of income for families living in poverty. With the support of PETCO, a South African recycling company, L4T supplies bags and equipment to facilitate this mission.
