Our Story
The journey of Friends of Hampshire County Homeless Individuals began in the harsh winter of 1994, when a tragic incident highlighted the urgent need for shelter in our community. A homeless man lost his life on the railway tracks due to the lack of available beds at the Grove Street Inn. In response, then-Mayor Mary Ford rallied local churches to provide emergency overnight shelter. Seven churches stepped up, rotating their resources to house and feed the homeless during the cold months.
This collaboration between the City, ServiceNet, and dedicated volunteers laid the foundation for a long-lasting relationship aimed at addressing homelessness. By 1997, a permanent site was established in the basement of 43 Center St. Northampton, known as the Interfaith Winter Shelter. Friends of Hampshire County Homeless Individuals has been a steadfast supporter of this shelter, providing financial and volunteer assistance for many years.
Recently, the operation of the shelter transitioned to Clinical Support Options, allowing FHCHI to focus on creating permanent housing solutions inspired by the Housing First movement. Through the purchase, renovation, and development of several properties, FHCHI is committed to making a lasting impact on homelessness in Hampshire County.
