Our Story

Founded in 1981, Friends of Alta emerged from a deep commitment to environmental protection in Alta, Utah. Originally known as the Alta Defense Fund, the organization has evolved to focus on preserving the unique environment, heritage, and character of this beautiful area. Through partnerships with local, state, and national agencies, Friends of Alta engages the community in stewardship efforts that emphasize transparency and sustainability.

Impact

With over 4,500 volunteers, Friends of Alta has planted more than 2,200 trees and taken significant legal actions to protect the watershed and natural resources of Alta. Their initiatives have led to the establishment of conservation easements and educational programs that foster awareness and stewardship of the local environment.
