About Friends in Service Helping
Founded in May 1979, Friends in Service Helping (FISH) emerged as a beacon of hope for the homeless and hungry residents of Carson City, Nevada. In response to the escalating needs of the community, several local organizations united to form FISH, driven by a shared vision of compassion and support. Initially starting as a small food closet, FISH quickly expanded its services to include emergency shelter, thanks to the merger with Friends of Citizens Under Stress (FOCUS).
In the early 1980s, after a tragic incident highlighted the urgent need for shelter, FISH renovated a deserted building to establish FOCUS House, the first homeless shelter in rural Nevada. Today, FISH operates both FOCUS House for men and the Wylie House for women and families, providing the only year-round emergency shelters in Northern Nevada outside of Reno.
Impact in the Community
During the fiscal year 2021-2022, FISH served 2,782 households, with 76% living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. The organization provided over 247,410 meals through its food banks and dining room, along with 10,514 nights of shelter across its three emergency shelters.
