Our Story

Founded by Nate Johnson, a former prosecuting attorney, FreeWriters Minnesota emerged from a profound realization of the therapeutic benefits of free-writing. After mentoring a young man named Joe in a county drug court, Nate recognized the lack of emotional wellness programming in county jails. In 2019, he established FreeWriters to provide creative writing opportunities to inmates, helping them rediscover their potential and improve their mental health.

Impact

Since its inception, FreeWriters has held classes for over 1,000 inmates, resulting in the creation and performance of more than 3,000 pieces of writing. This initiative has significantly contributed to improved mental health and reduced recidivism among participants.
