Our Story

Freetown Village, Inc. is a living history museum without walls, founded in 1982 by Ophelia Wellington. This innovative organization teaches African American history through engaging theater, storytelling, and community involvement. Since its pilot project in 1984 at the Indiana State Museum, Freetown Village has reached over 1,000,000 individuals across Indiana and the Midwest, highlighting the trials and triumphs of African Americans, especially in the post-Civil War era.
