Our Story

In 2007, the CDF Freedom School Summer Literacy Enrichment Program was launched in Rochester’s Beechwood neighborhood, aiming to empower children in marginalized communities. This initiative has created a nurturing environment where children are valued and celebrated, enhancing their reading skills while connecting them to their culture. Through self-discipline, fun activities, and community service, the program has fostered confidence and progress among hundreds of children.

In response to the challenges posed by COVID-19 in 2020, a dedicated group of servant leaders, teachers, and community members came together to form the Freedom Scholars Learning Center (FSLC). This independent organization builds on the strong foundation of the Freedom School, continuing to serve families and youth in the community.

Impact

The Freedom Scholars Learning Center provides a safe and supportive environment that focuses on academic success, cultural recognition, and community engagement. This holistic approach has led to improved literacy skills and increased confidence among participants.
