Our Story

Founded in 2020 by Reginald Dwayne Betts, Freedom Reads aims to transform the experience of incarceration by opening libraries in cellblocks. With a vision of a Freedom Library in every prison cellblock across the United States, the organization emphasizes the dignity and humanity of those affected by the criminal legal system.

Impact

Freedom Reads has established 413 Freedom Libraries in 44 adult and youth prisons, shipping over 236,500 books to incarcerated readers. This initiative creates transformative experiences through literature, design, and architecture, significantly impacting the lives of those in prison.
