Fort Smith Emergency Medical Services was established on December 27, 1978, to provide professional pre-hospital care to the residents of Fort Smith and Van Buren. Initially operating with two basic life support ambulances, Fort Smith EMS has evolved into a vital service, now offering exclusive paramedic services to Fort Smith and 911 response for Barling, utilizing eight advanced life support ambulances. With a dedicated team of 65 personnel, Fort Smith EMS covers a service area of 65 square miles, responding to over 11,000 emergency calls annually.
