About Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps

In 1971, a tragic event in Forest Hills sparked the formation of the Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps (FHVAC). After a local man lost his life waiting over two hours for an ambulance, concerned residents banded together to create a volunteer service dedicated to improving emergency response times in their community. The first headquarters was established at 102-23 Metropolitan Avenue, in the storefront of the local Democratic Club, with Anne Barbasso as the first president.

Since its inception, FHVAC has grown significantly. In its first year of service, the corps responded to just 43 calls. By 1976, that number had skyrocketed to 724. The organization not only provides free emergency care and transportation but also offers non-emergency medical transports, first aid and CPR training, and loans of medical supplies like wheelchairs and walkers.

Community Engagement and Events

FHVAC has been a steadfast presence at numerous community events, including the United States Open at the West Side Tennis Club and concerts featuring renowned artists. Today, the corps continues to support local events such as the New York City Marathon, the Five Borough Bike Tour, and the annual Night Out Against Crime.

In 1989, FHVAC broke ground on its current headquarters at 92-29 Metropolitan Avenue, which has since become a hub for community service. The organization expanded its reach into Rego Park, ensuring that more residents have access to vital emergency services.

Responding to Crisis

FHVAC's commitment to service was profoundly tested on September 11, 2001, when the corps responded to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. Members Joseph Reardon and Anthony Logozzo were among the first volunteer ambulance crews to arrive at the scene. Tragically, the day claimed the life of FHVAC member Richard Allen Pearlman, who selflessly rushed to help. In his honor, FHVAC dedicated two new ambulances and a memorial wall, ensuring that his legacy of service lives on.

Impact and Community Support

FHVAC has responded to thousands of emergency calls, providing critical medical care and transportation to the residents of Forest Hills and Rego Park. The organization also plays a vital role in community education by teaching first aid and CPR, ensuring that residents are prepared for emergencies.

Why Donate?

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, FHVAC relies heavily on donations from the community to cover essential expenses such as insurance, fuel, vehicle maintenance, and medical supplies. Your financial support is crucial to keeping ambulances on the road and providing emergency services to those in need.
