Our Story

Food is Free Albuquerque began in August 2014 when Erin and Trista, passionate canners and food preservers, discovered an abundance of unused fruit trees in Albuquerque. An ad on Craigslist seeking access to these trees led to their first harvest, yielding over 100 pounds of fruit. This unexpected bounty sparked a movement that would grow beyond their initial vision.

Inspired by the global Food is Free Project, founded in Austin, Texas, Erin and Trista sought permission to establish a local chapter. With a Facebook page launched, they organized their first community harvest, leaving boxes of free apples at bus stops, inviting neighbors to share in the abundance.

Impact

Since its inception, Food is Free Albuquerque has distributed over 100,000 pounds of food, providing more than 500,000 servings to those in need, effectively addressing food insecurity in New Mexico.
