Our Story

Founded in 1983 by compassionate members of McFarlin United Methodist Church, Food and Shelter began by distributing meals to hungry individuals in community parks. Recognizing the growing need, a coalition of volunteers expanded services, leading to the opening of Food for Friends in 1987. In 2017, a new campus was established, enhancing the ability to serve families and individuals seeking food and shelter.

Our Impact

On average, Food and Shelter serves 250 meals daily, totaling over 180,000 meals in 2018 alone. The organization provides short-term, long-term, and supportive housing for the homeless, while also implementing a unique prevention program that addresses homelessness before it starts, saving the community resources and reducing trauma for families.
