Established in 1975 by visionary Carl Tonjes, the Fond du Lac Area Foundation was created to empower individuals to give back to their community. With an initial endowment of $50,000 from the disbanded Children’s Home, the Foundation has grown exponentially over the decades. From its humble beginnings, it now manages over 340 funds and has assets exceeding $40 million.

Under the leadership of various executive directors, including Janet Schmidt and Sandi Braun Roehrig, the Foundation has expanded its reach and impact. A significant milestone was achieved in 1999 when it received a $900,000 grant for the arts, marking a turning point in its commitment to cultural enrichment.
