First Steps

Our Story

First Steps began its journey in 1958, offering daycare services for children with exceptional needs. Over the years, the organization has expanded its reach, adding a Community Outreach Program in 1998 to provide early intervention services in community settings. A significant merger in 2007 allowed First Steps to serve Spanish-speaking families, further enhancing its commitment to inclusivity. In 2010, the organization found a permanent home in the McWhorter Family Children’s Center Green Hills, and in 2012, Pediatric Therapy services were introduced, ensuring comprehensive support for children with special needs.

Impact

Each year, First Steps positively impacts the lives of over 1,000 children facing a variety of special needs and medical conditions, including autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, and developmental delays.
