Our Story

Founded in 2014 by Keira McNett and Laura Brown, First Shift Justice Project is dedicated to protecting the rights of workers in their first shift of paid employment. This initiative is crucial for those who also bear the responsibilities of caregiving in their second shift. The organization addresses the discrimination faced by parents and caregivers in low-wage jobs, empowering them to assert their rights and prevent job loss.

Our Impact

In 2022, First Shift Justice Project made significant strides by educating 441 women and parents about their workplace rights. The organization provided individualized legal services to 120 clients, successfully recovering $56,000 in back wages and damages. Additionally, 237 medical providers were trained on pregnancy accommodations and paid family leave, further enhancing support for working families.
