Our Story

In 2004, Valerie Denghel discovered a pressing need while volunteering at Woods Lake Elementary in Kalamazoo. Many students arrived at school wearing shoes that were worn, torn, or ill-fitting, with some even missing school due to inadequate footwear. To address this issue, Valerie began purchasing new shoes for these children. By 2005, she had distributed 160 pairs of shoes to students attending KPS summer school. Recognizing the ongoing need, First Day Shoe Fund was established in 2006. Since then, FDSF has expanded significantly, thanks to community collaborations, support from Kalamazoo Communities in Schools, and the dedication of numerous volunteers. Today, FDSF proudly provides new athletic shoes to students in all public elementary schools across Kalamazoo County.
