Firefighters Burn Institute

Our Story

In 1972, a tragic airplane crash at Sacramento Executive Airport claimed the lives of 23 individuals, including firefighter Gene LaVine and eight of his family members. This devastating event spurred Captain Cliff Haskell of the Sacramento Fire Department to take action. He initiated fundraising efforts that led to the establishment of the Firefighters Burn Institute (FFBI) in December 1973. The primary mission was to create a specialized burn treatment facility in the Sacramento area.

By collaborating with the University of California Davis Medical Center, FFBI successfully opened the UCDMC Regional Burn Center in January 1974. Over the decades, the organization has expanded its mission to encompass burn research, public education, fire prevention, and recovery support for burn survivors and their families. Firefighters play a crucial role in the planning and execution of all programs, which has been key to FFBI's success.
