Feeding Alabama: A Mission to End Hunger
Founded in 2010, Feeding Alabama (FAL) is dedicated to combating hunger across the state of Alabama. As a proud member of the Feeding America Network, FAL collaborates with food banks and community leaders to ensure that food and funds are effectively distributed to those in need. The organization plays a vital role in raising public awareness about food insecurity and advocating for policies that support hunger relief.
Feeding Alabama's initiatives include disaster response efforts, partnerships with agencies to provide hunger relief programs, and grant administration to support local food banks. The organization has been recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Feeding America for its impactful work in addressing food insecurity.
One of the significant achievements of Feeding Alabama is its involvement in Gov. Kay Ivey’s End Child Hunger in Alabama Taskforce. In 2014, the organization opened four summer meal sites in Florence, Alabama, addressing the critical need for meals for children who rely on free and reduced lunch during the school year. Since then, Feeding Alabama has reached over 20,000 children and served more than a million meals, establishing the first non-school based summer meals program in Florence, Auburn, and Tuscaloosa.
In recognition of its efforts, Feeding Alabama received the Turnip the Beet Meal Sponsor Bronze Award from USDA-FNS for its service to rural and underserved communities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, Feeding Alabama secured over $300,000 in funding from the National League of Cities to expand summer and after-school feeding programs in various Alabama cities.
Through its advocate training program, Feeding Alabama educates food bank agencies, elected officials, and community partners about the realities of food insecurity in the state. With 1 in 5 children and 1 in 6 adults facing food insecurity, the organization is committed to raising awareness and understanding of hunger in Alabama.
