Our Story

The Federal Defenders of New York has a rich history rooted in the commitment to justice for all. Established in 1964 following the enactment of the Criminal Justice Act, this organization emerged from the Legal Aid Society to provide dedicated legal representation for individuals accused of federal crimes. In 2005, it became an independent nonprofit, continuing its mission to serve those who cannot afford legal counsel.

Impact

With a focus on communities disproportionately affected by systemic injustices, the Federal Defenders of New York defends individuals who are often marginalized in the criminal justice system. Approximately 75% of those charged are Black or Latinx, and over 80% lack the financial means to hire an attorney.
