Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC

Our Story

The Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC (GMCW) was founded in 1981, inspired by a performance from the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus at the Kennedy Center. Marsha Pearson, a dedicated advocate for the gay community, organized the inaugural meeting on June 28, 1981, coinciding with the 12th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Since its debut performance on September 23, 1981, GMCW has passionately promoted equality and inclusion through the power of music.

Impact

For over 43 years, GMCW has raised its voice for equality, delivering more than 100 outreach performances each season and contributing nearly 5,000 volunteer hours. The chorus has graced significant events, including performances for President Obama, amplifying messages of justice and inclusion.
