Our Story
In October 2002, leaders in Tulsa recognized the urgent need for a new approach to support victims of domestic violence. Inspired by the San Diego Justice Center, which successfully co-located services for domestic violence victims, the Family Safety Center was established to provide a comprehensive range of services in one location. This innovative model led to a significant reduction in domestic violence homicides in San Diego, prompting the U.S. Department of Justice to fund similar initiatives nationwide.
On July 21, 2004, Tulsa was awarded a grant as part of the President’s Family Justice Center Initiative, allowing the city to create a safe haven for victims and their families. The Family Safety Center officially opened its doors on January 24, 2006, bringing together eight community partners, including non-profit organizations, law enforcement, and legal professionals, to offer seamless support to those in need.
