Our Story

In October 2002, leaders in Tulsa recognized the urgent need for a new approach to support victims of domestic violence. Inspired by the San Diego Justice Center, which successfully co-located services for domestic violence victims, the Family Safety Center was established to provide a comprehensive range of services in one location. This innovative model led to a significant reduction in domestic violence homicides in San Diego, prompting the U.S. Department of Justice to fund similar initiatives nationwide.

On July 21, 2004, Tulsa was awarded a grant as part of the President’s Family Justice Center Initiative, allowing the city to create a safe haven for victims and their families. The Family Safety Center officially opened its doors on January 24, 2006, bringing together eight community partners, including non-profit organizations, law enforcement, and legal professionals, to offer seamless support to those in need.

Impact

The Family Safety Center is dedicated to providing wrap-around services that empower victims of domestic violence. By ensuring that perpetrators are prosecuted and that victims receive the legal support they need, the center has significantly reduced the number of unreported domestic violence cases in Tulsa County. Additionally, the center offers forensic medical assistance and resources for children exposed to domestic violence, creating a safer community for all.
