Our Story
The journey of Family Promise began with a compassionate act in New York City, where Karen Olson, now president emeritus of the national organization, recognized the plight of homeless families. After witnessing the struggles of families in her hometown of Union County, NJ, she mobilized local congregations to provide shelter and support. In just ten months, 11 congregations opened their doors, leading to the establishment of the first Interfaith Hospitality Network on October 27, 1986. Today, Family Promise has expanded to over 200 affiliates across 43 states, engaging more than 200,000 volunteers and 6,500 congregations to support over 126,000 homeless family members annually, with 58% being children.
