About Family House

Family House was founded out of a deep desire to provide family-centered care in partnership with UCSF. The vision of the founders was to create a sanctuary for families of seriously ill young patients, particularly those battling childhood cancer. Each year, approximately 16,000 cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed in the United States, turning families' lives upside down. The emotional and financial strain of a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, especially when families must travel long distances to receive treatment at large medical centers like UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

Our Story

In the 1970s, Dr. Arthur Ablin, Head of Clinical Pediatric Oncology at UCSF, recognized the hardships faced by families of children undergoing cancer treatment. Many parents were forced to sleep in their cars or hospital waiting rooms due to the high costs of nearby accommodations. In response, Dr. Ablin and a group of compassionate individuals raised nearly $500,000 to purchase housing from the Mormon Church adjacent to the UCSF Children’s Hospital. This initiative led to the establishment of the original Family House on Irving Street, which provided shelter for 10 families.

As the need for support grew, Family House expanded its services, acquiring a second property in 2001 to accommodate 34 families each night. With the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital's move to Mission Bay, Family House also relocated, opening the 80-bedroom Nancy and Stephen Grand Family House in 2016. This new facility is equipped with communal kitchens, living spaces, laundry facilities, a fitness room, a meditation room, and a private courtyard, all designed to foster a sense of community and support.
