Our Story

Founded in 1969 by Anne Sanford, Families and Communities Rising (FCR) began with a mission to support the education of young children with disabilities. With the development of the Chapel Hill Model, FCR created innovative assessment tools and curricula that prioritize family involvement. Since joining the Head Start initiative in 1973, FCR has expanded its reach, currently serving around 1,000 children in Orange and Durham Counties, North Carolina, and participating in national programs like FRIENDS and ARCH.

Impact

FCR has a proven track record of improving the lives of children and families, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, caregivers of the elderly, and children facing disabilities or abuse. The organization’s holistic approach ensures that families receive the support they need to thrive.
