Our Story

The Falmouth Land Trust was founded in 1981 by dedicated community members passionate about preserving the rural character of Falmouth. Over the years, FLT has successfully conserved over 2,700 acres of land, ensuring public access through an extensive network of trails. In 2010, the development of the Cross Falmouth Trail began, connecting Portland to Windham and showcasing the Trust's commitment to conservation. In 2015, FLT expanded its mission by adding a 62-acre working farm, partnering with Cultivating Community to restore agricultural practices and enhance local food production. This collaboration not only boosts food security for New Americans but also strengthens the agricultural economy in the region. In 2023, FLT proudly achieved accreditation from The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, affirming its dedication to excellence in land conservation.

Our Impact

In Maine, land trusts protect over 12% of the state, which is twice the size of all state parks and public lands combined. FLT has safeguarded over 2.34 million acres of publicly accessible land, including more than 1,000 miles of recreational trails, vital wildlife habitats, managed forests, and working waterfronts and farms.
