Evolutionary Aquatics began in 2014 as the Mahogany Mermaids, a social swim group dedicated to addressing the lack of swim and social aquatic programs for mature Black women. In 2018, the organization joined US Masters Swimming, earning instructor and coaching certifications, and became a guiding source for other Black-based clubs. With a grant received in 2020, Evolutionary Aquatics was officially formed, fostering an inclusive culture in the recreational aquatic world.
Since its inception, Evolutionary Aquatics has created a supportive and diverse community that promotes swimming as a life-saving skill, particularly for Black adults. The organization has successfully provided low to no-cost swim lessons and recreational programming.
