Everyday Sunshine: A Journey of Inclusion
Everyday Sunshine was born from a heartfelt desire to create a more inclusive world for individuals with disabilities. The journey began with the birth of Amelie, who was diagnosed with TUBB 5, ataxic cerebral palsy, and congenital cataracts. This personal experience ignited a passion to make a difference, leading to the formation of a nonprofit organization in 2012.
Through concerts, puppet shows, karaoke nights, and various community events, Everyday Sunshine has brought joy and connection to children with disabilities and their families. Collaborating with organizations like the ARC of Morgan County and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the nonprofit has fostered a sense of community and support.
Recognizing the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, particularly regarding employment, Everyday Sunshine established a thrift store in Decatur. This initiative not only provides job training for adults with disabilities but also serves as a work co-op for high school students in the AIM Developmental Program. The thrift store has successfully trained six adults, empowering them with essential job skills and a sense of purpose.
In 2019, the vision for an inclusive playground emerged, leading to the creation of the Everyday Sunshine Playpark. This project, made possible through collaboration with the City of Decatur and local churches, aims to provide a safe and welcoming space for children of all abilities to play and thrive.
Everyday Sunshine continues to grow, driven by the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to shine. With ongoing projects and community support, the organization is committed to making a lasting impact in Decatur and beyond.
