Essential Theatre is the longest-running theatre dedicated to supporting Georgia playwrights. Since the inaugural Essential Play Festival in 1999, this vibrant organization has premiered or presented 48 new works by 39 different playwrights from Georgia. Many of these plays have achieved publication and have been produced across the country, showcasing the talent and creativity of local artists.
Since its inception, Essential Theatre has enriched Atlanta's cultural landscape by presenting new plays and fostering the growth of Georgia playwrights. The theatre's first Playwriting Award winner, Lauren Gunderson, has become the most-produced living playwright in America, highlighting the significance of this organization in the national theatre community.
