Our Story
Founded in 1991, Equality Illinois began as the Illinois Federation for Human Rights, dedicated to securing and defending the civil rights of LGBTQ+ individuals across the state. With a rich history of activism led by pioneers like Arthur Johnston and Rick Garcia, the organization has evolved into the largest and most effective LGBTQ+ equality organization in Illinois. In 2000, the Equality Illinois Education Project was established, and in 2016, it was renamed the Equality Illinois Institute to emphasize its commitment to education and advocacy. Through conferences, publications, and training sessions, the Institute engages the public and institutions in vital conversations about equality.
