Our Story

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County was established in 1969 to combat the proposed Fox Valley Freeway, which threatened the delicate ecosystems of the Fox River watershed. Initially known as the Defenders of the Fox, the organization merged with another local group in 1970, evolving into the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County. For over 50 years, this dedicated group has championed environmental protection and sustainability through community engagement and advocacy.

Impact

Through tireless efforts, the Environmental Defenders have successfully influenced local environmental policies, including the McHenry County Stormwater Ordinance and the regulation of gravel mining. Their initiatives, such as recycling drives and community clean-up events, have significantly enhanced local environmental health and awareness.
