Our Story

The English-Speaking Union of the United States was founded in 1920 by Sir Evelyn Wrench and a group of dedicated individuals who believed in the power of language to foster understanding and peace. Established shortly after the ESU of the British Commonwealth, this organization emerged from the desire to maintain the close ties formed during World War I. Over the past century, the ESU has adapted to the evolving needs of American society while remaining committed to its mission of enhancing education and cultural exchange.

Impact

Each year, the ESU serves over 350 immigrants from more than 60 countries, with 100% reporting improved English skills. Additionally, 93% of participants feel more at home in the U.S. Through individual career advising and professional mentoring, the ESU has achieved a remarkable 23% reduction in unemployment among its mentees.
