Empowered Parents in Community: A Story of Advocacy

Empowered Parents in Community (EPiC) began as a grassroots initiative in a magnet school, where parents of Black and white students united to address a growing achievement gap. This collaboration with school administrators led to the formation of the Parents of African American Children (PAAC), advocating for equitable educational resources. Established in 2019, EPiC continues this vital work, focusing on empowering parents and advocating for systemic change across Durham Public Schools and beyond.

Impacting Education for Black Children

EPiC has successfully engaged parents in advocacy efforts that have led to significant policy changes, increased culturally responsive curriculum, and the formation of 17 affinity groups, enhancing Black parent engagement. These initiatives have resulted in improved educational opportunities for Black children in Durham.
