Emmaus Inc: A Beacon of Hope for the Homeless

Founded in 1985 by a dedicated group of citizens, Emmaus Inc has been at the forefront of addressing homelessness in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The journey began with the opening of our first shelter in January 1987, which quickly revealed that emergency shelter alone was insufficient to break the cycle of homelessness. Recognizing the need for sustainable solutions, Emmaus evolved into a community housing development organization in the early 1990s, focusing on creating diverse housing options tailored to the unique needs of our clients.

Over the years, Emmaus has developed 19 properties, providing 99 units of permanent supportive housing and emergency shelter for 54 families and 30 individuals each night. Our commitment to expanding services includes street outreach, homeless prevention, rapid rehousing, and supportive services for newly housed families. With a strong tradition of engaging volunteers and community partners, Emmaus continues to innovate in the fight against homelessness.

Impact of Emmaus

Since our inception, Emmaus has served over 40,000 homeless individuals and families, becoming a recognized leader in the Greater Haverhill community. On any given night, 300 individuals find solace and support at Emmaus, and since 2010, we have successfully placed 3,000 individuals and families into permanent housing.
